Natural home remedies for snoring
Snoring is not normal. If you snore it means your airways are obstructed in some way. Sometimes snoring is a minor, temporary problem caused by allergies or a cold but serious snoring needs to be taken seriously. It could be Sleep Apnea and this can be a fatal condition so, when in doubt, please consult a medical practitioner.
When/if you consult a doctor it may be helpful to take along a pre recorded tape of the person snoring so the doctor has a better understanding of the problem.
Try some of the remedies below. If they don't help then you are strongly advised to seek professional advice.
Information and tips on preventing snoring
If mucous is the problem and your nose is blocked, try using salt water to flush out your nose. Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt to a glass of boiled and cooled water. Sniff up the solution or use a dropper.
Check out the position the snorer is in when he/she snores. Is there a better sleep position which will alleviate or reduce the problem? Usually sleeping on the back causes more snoring than on the side as the throat tissue relaxes and and it can block the airway. Place a tennis ball inside an old sock and pin or sew the sock onto the back of the snorer's pyjamas. Each time he/she rolls onto their back, the ball will be uncomfortable and will awaken them enough for them to roll onto their side. Eventually they stop sleeping on their backs.
Sedating medicines such as sleeping pills and anti histamines can actually cause snoring because their action relaxes nerves and muscles and relaxed muscles reduce the tone in the throat and the nose and therefore make snoring more likely.
Lose weight and exercise more. When you lose weight you reduce the fatty tissue in your airway and hence decreases blockage.
Raise the top of the bed by 10 cms (4 inches). This is best achieved not by using extra pillows but by placing blankets/towels under the mattress. This may make the tongue and jaw move into a more forward position and hence decrease blockage.
Give up smoking. Smoking thickens the mucous membranes and tissues of the throat and nose. Also it blocks small vessels in the lungs.
Avoid high fat dairy products because they increase mucous which may not drain away properly and hence cause snoring.
Alcohol causes a relaxation of the airways to the lungs and thereby can cause snoring.
Snoring can be a symptom of diabetes or hypo thyroidism so it is not a problem to be laughed at or glossed over. If in any doubt, seek professional advice.
