Home Remedies For Hiccups
Hiccups are caused by involuntary contraction of the diaphragm. They can be started when we swallow too much air when drinking or getting excited. They can also be started by eating gaseous food such as cabbage or beans. Or even by eating hot and cold foods at the same time. Drinking carbonated drinks or alcohol can do the same thing.

Stop hiccups - tips and hintsIn most cases simply doing nothing will stop the hiccups. Place a small piece of lemon in your mouth. Stand up. Bend forward and push your head between your legs as far as you can go. This really works. My grandmother gave me this tip many years ago. Author's tip. Stand up. Extend both hands straight above your head and wriggle your fingers. Place half a teaspoon of sugar on your tongue and leave it there until it has completely dissolved. This remedy is great for babies and young children but use much less sugar. Drink a small glass of water or juice through a straw. Put your fingers in your ears for 20 seconds to short circuit the vagus nerve that controls hiccupping. Breathe into a paper bag. It seems inhaling more carbon dioxide can stop hiccups. Sit on a chair or on the floor. Compress your chest by bringing your knees up to your chest.
Extended bouts of hiccupping should be investigated by your doctor as it can be caused by a serious ailment. |
